Hiring a nanny is an important task, one that requires a lot of planning. You want the best possible candidate to care for your children and this means having the right nanny interview questions to ask the potential nanny.
The questions you ask should pertain to your children. If you have young children still in diapers, you will ask different questions than if your children are old enough to be in school.
Main questions include asking if they are CPR and First Aid trained. This should be done over the phone so they can bring proof of their training and certification. If your children are young, you may also need to ask if the nanny has proper training in crib safety, diapers and bottle feeding. They should also know how to install a car seat and how to use helmets properly. They should also be aware of your child's specific nutritional needs and 911 procedures.
Other general nanny interview questions include:
* What do you consider the difference between a babysitter and a nanny?
* What are your opinions on discipline?
* Tell me about your last childcare experience and include why it ended.
* What is your opinion on spanking? Have you done this in the past?
* How would you handle a biting child, whether the child was biting you or another person?
* How would you handle a child that hit another child?
* Have you ever handled an emergency with a child? If the answer is yes, ask them to explain what happened.
* Ask the potential nanny if they are comfortable with doing household chores, if that is part of the agreement. This can be fixing meals/snacks, doing laundry, making appointments, etc.
* If your children will be attending school, you should make sure the nanny knows. If she will need to pick them up from school or drop them off, this should also be discussed.
* What do you enjoy doing in your free time? If she mentioned television, ask her what types of shows she watches. If these are too much for your children, make sure she understands this and explain what is appropriate.
* If confidentiality is very important to you, make sure the potential nanny knows this and is willing to sign a confidentiality clause. Feel free to ask what confidentiality means to the nanny and give your definition as well.
You should also consider what your non-negotiable terms are and make sure the nanny knows this. Nanny interview questions are important to make sure you have a good fit for your family, so do not feel bad asking certain kinds of questions.
