Twitter Campaigns

Twitter Campaigns Twitter is a great option if you don't have a huge marketing budget, but it does take a significant investment of time if you want to do it right. Before you jump into running a Twitter campaign, here are a few things to remember.

1. Don't run a campaign if you're brand new to Twitter. You need to have some tweets on your page and some followers for people to take your seriously. People will peek at your previous tweets and decide if they want to follow you, so make sure you have some interesting and diverse content in your feed before you try and build your number of followers with a campaign. Listen and provide content for a little while, then join the conversation and try to gain followers.

2. Set a goal for your campaign. Do you want to build followers? Create buzz around your brand or a specific product? You should determine your end goal for you campaign and then tackle accordingly. Also spend some time checking out what your competition is doing and what people in your local community are talking about.

3. Get yourself organized. I recommend using Tweetdeck to keep track of your Twitter community. It allows you to organize into separate columns - your Twitter stream, your followers, your @mentions, your Direct Messages, etc. If you don't get organized and set up beforehand, you will be scrambling and wasting time trying to react.

4. Engage with your audience, don't just talk at them. Your campaign can't be a one way street. Sales pitches aren't a campaign and in fact you should never really tweet a sales pitch. People don't want to be spammed. Provide valuable, interesting content. Educate your followers. Spark interesting conversations.

5. Twitter campaigns can be inexpensive, but they are a major time commitment. Depending on how big your audience is, you should commit at least a few hours everyday. People really appreciate timely responses and interactions from brands. It makes them feel special.

6. Do your research. If you plan to use a specific hashtag, for example, make sure their isn't a whole other community out there already using it for something else. See what people are saying about your product and other products in your category, so you can be best prepared.

There are many different types of Twitter campaigns that you can run, so get creative. The best ones always use Twitter in a natural way. Don't try and reinvent the platform.
