Remember, a large part of any holiday cost is made up of flight duties, so by reducing your mileage and making use of budget airlines you should have more to enjoy when you do eventually arrive.

If you do have a particular destination in mind, look out for deals months ahead. Contacting travel agents to discuss details is a good way of getting a rough idea of the likely cost for a holiday. Even if you choose to buy elsewhere, these kinds of conversations can be hugely helpful, plus you can ask them to keep you informed of any deals in that area.

The Internet of course is probably the best research tool available to you. Also, if you're planning on doing a number of trips away, take a look at how the price of hiring a car will compare to taxis and coach excursions. If purchased as part of an initial package, car hire can be remarkably cheap.

If you find out the cost of certain destinations such as theme parks, museums and live shows first, then you can factor these in to your budget and consider alternatives if you find that your spending has increased more than you thought it would. You don't want to get stung with unexpected bills and other costs if possible. That's how your budget can really go awry and expenses can spiral out of control.
