The airport was originally named RAF Hum and the town retains strong connections to the Royal Air Force; the Bombardier Services company supplies the RAF with training aircraft.

The emerging creative sector is one of its more recent areas of growth and new enterprise. It's strongly supported by the Arts Institute at Bournemouth and by the strong creative programmes at Bournemouth University. The Arts Institute in particular is a big drive for the creative sector -- its new Enterprise Pavilion provides a focal centre for many emerging creative and media businesses.
