On September 11, 2001 our country was changed forever. We watched in horror as the Twin Towers were hit by two planes. We were shocked and devastated as we watched these buildings collapse on live television. From that day on we knew things would never be the same.
It was that event that led to our country's War on Terrorism. We weren't about to just let people attack our country without retaliating. At the time our country screamed for blood. We wanted to get back at the people who had caused such an atrocity. It was time for war. A war, many now believe, was a war for oil.
Ten years later, support for the War on Terrorism has certainly dwindled. This is undoubtedly due to the fact that we have not seen such an attack since 9/11. While many people believe that we should pull back our troops and focus on our homeland more, we all agree that we shouldn't fund terrorists.
Nobody in their right mind would ever give terrorists money just so they could turn around and attack us again when our backs are turned. But ironically enough, that is what we are doing every day.
Our dependence on foreign oils is helping to fund terrorism. Currently we are sending over 10% of the money we spend on oil to Saudi Arabia. And we are sending 10% to Venezuela. This may not seem like much. After all that's only ten percent apiece. But when you figure we spend billions on oil each year, that's a lot of money!
Here's what Jim Costa had to say on our country's oil dependency, "Despite the previous efforts of Congresses, our addiction to foreign oil, as the President stated, is greater today than ever before. That dependency is a threat to our national security, and we must address that threat."
Right now we have been given the chance to start reducing our dependency on foreign oils. If we were to allow the pipeline proposal to be allowed then we could reduce the amount of oil we need from terrorist countries.
By not allowing this proposal we are funding terrorists. We are giving them the opportunity to attack us again. That is a risk that should never be worth it, no matter what the benefits. It's time we took the opportunity to reduce the amount of funding sent to foreign countries.
