It can be common for most people to spend a little more during the holidays. This can be normal as more money is needed to pay for the food, drinks and the gifts. I'm a big fan of spread betting.

The spread betting phenomenon has opened up financial trading to many more people - it makes accessing the markets so fast, simple and - best of all - cheap!

But it does have its detractors - those who dismiss it as "gambling", or as too risky.

In my view, financial spread betting can be explained as no more gambling than other investment. Fortunately, the Chancellor takes a different view, which is why it enjoys its tax-free status!

Of course, there's an argument that if you can make something too cheap and too easy to access - but I'll leave that debate to anyone stocking up on "buy one, get one free" beers at Tesco - That's not to say that we can't all still learn a thing or two about spread betting, so I thought I'd pass on a few points that you really should know if you're a spread better...

Sharing has a whole new meaning for anyone conducting a tax preparer job in California for same-sex couples. The recognition of domestic partnerships - when combined with community property laws - results in equal sharing of all income. Therefore, each individual shares in half the income regardless of who earned it.

A California tax preparer is familiar with how this situation affects state and federal reporting of income. The community property states of Nevada and Washington have created the same circumstances with their domestic partnership laws.

The income tax preparation for state returns must divide the income equally according to the community property laws of the state. But federal income tax returns still report only separately earned income. The individuals in these cases use a filing status of single since that's the only option for domestic partners under IRS rules.

Here's a great technique for all managers, supervisors, and anyone who has to confront a subordinate for inappropriate or less than a superlative performance. I call it "Giving 'em the chair." It works like this.

You call the would-be offender into your office and exchange the initial pleasantries and establish a modicum of rapport and you start out with something like "I have a problem and I was wondering if I could ask you to help me figure something out." Notice we haven't blamed anyone or told him he has a problem, yet. The usual response is that the candidate will lower his guard and be more than willing to help you and the team. Then proceed to let him peek behind the curtain. Tell him you have been having an issue with an employee, don't say too much, keep it light and immediately segue and ask him to sit in your chair. Ask it as a favor. "Would you do me a favor, this will really help me, please sit in my chair for a moment, no really, please." After the initial reluctance he will settle into the chair. Then ask him in a jesting way, "Whudyathink, it's a nice chair, huh?"
